For lightning fast composting, we offer the Biopod Grub Composter. This composter is ideal for food scraps and kitchen waste. Compost bacteria can take 4-6 months to break down food scraps, but this composter can dispose of your scraps in 48 hours.

The Bio Pod Composter is also a great alternative if your compost mix has too much moisture for other composters. If you live in an apartment and don’t have yard clippings, this composter is ideal. It works using Soldier Flies in their juvenile phase. These grubs prefer damp food and will quickly convert the moisture into compost tea that can be used to irrigate and fertilize your plants. One BioPod can easily handle the food scraps of an average family. It will process up to 5 lbs of compost per day. The Bio Pod will convert about 5% of the waste into friable compost. For every 100 lbs of kitchen scraps you put in, 5 lbs of friable compost are produced, plus a few quarts of compost tea, and approximately 15-20 lbs of Grubs. Compost tea is collected below the biopod and biogrubs are collected in a side compartment.

BioGrubs take between 2 weeks and 4 months to mature in warm weather. Cold weather and food shortages can slow down that process, but each grub will give at least 2 weeks of work before it turns into an adult. Adult Soldier Flies live for about 7 days and do not bite – in fact, they don’t even have mouth parts! When the lid and ventilation hood is in place on top of your BioPod, the adult flies will stay inside and lay fresh eggs in a continuous cycle. If a few get out and fly away, don’t worry. They’re a native species and can escape into the wild without affecting the local environment.

The grubs are self-harvesting. As they search for new things to munch on, a steady stream of grubs will find the overflow channel and fall into the catch container. These plump grubs are highly nutritious – while I haven’t tried them, I do know several fish, birds, chickens, snakes, and lizards that love to munch on grubs! In addition, grubs can often times be used as aquaculture feed! If you have a pet that eats grubs, this composter is a great way to cut down on your petfood bill and turn kitchen scraps into fertilizer at the same time!

If your porch or patio has an insect problem, the BioPod can be used to keep flies and other bugs away. As they chow down on scraps, your grubs will release a natural insect repellent called a synomone. This chemical communicator warns foraging bugs that they should look elsewhere for untapped food.

The BioPod is made from Medium Density Polyethylene. This solid core plastic is roto-molded and UV-stabilized so that it won’t break down in sunlight. There are no styrofoam parts, and the plastic is fully recyclable.

Please note the BioPod does not include any grubs. Soldier flies will naturally be attracted to your compost bin and will lay their eggs to get the process started. If you live in an area where the Soldier fly does not live, then this composter will not work.

Can the BioPod handle pet waste?
No – it is generally a bad idea to mix pet waste along with food scraps or yard trimmings. Pet droppings often contain harmful bacteria (such as e coli) and can disrupt the composting process.

The BioPod is shipped in a ready-to-assemble form to cut down on shipping costs. You will need a flat head screwdriver and socket wrench, but total assembly time should only take 15 to 30 minutes.
