Winter Composting

Using your compost bin in the winter can at times prove to be difficult. There can be numerous worries - from making sure there is enough stuff in your compost bin, to the freezing temperatures of the winter having a detrimental effect on your compost pile.

This video offers advice on what to do with your compost bin in the wintertime from making sure that it is properly and continuously filled, and what to do if you are running out of room in the bin. Following these easy steps will ensure that the compost pile will be ready for the spring!

Here are Lars' tips for composting in the wintertime:
  • Keep adding material! When it gets really cold outside, the composting process may slow down or come to a complete stop, but once it begins to warm up again outside, the composting process starts again naturally and on its own.

  • If your compost bin or pile starts to get too full or big to manage, you can stop adding to it again until it is warm enough to start breaking down. You can also start a new pile or bin, and when the spring rolls around, you'll have two continuous compost bins creating rich compost all the time.

  • The product in this video is the Tumbleweed Compost Bin and it can be found with our wonderful assortment of compost bins available in the Compost Bin section.
