The test tubes require only a small sample of soil from your lawn or garden. Mix this with water in the test tube, then the pill will dissolve and change color. The reactants are color coded and work in less than 10 minutes. The green pill measures pH, purple detects Nitrogen, blue measures Phosphorus, and orange indicates Potash levels.

Tomatoes need a healthy balance of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potash for healthy leaves and full fruit. This home testing kit takes the guesswork out of fertilizing your soil.

Nitrogen is directly responsible for healthy green leaves, and it is vital in the first few weeks of a tomato seedling's growth. On the other hand, too much nitrogen can cause stunted fruit growth or even root burn.

Phosphorus is essential for root growth. It also helps roots and flowers develop. Without sufficient Phosphorous, your tomatoes will be unable to get enough nutrients from the soil and they will have lower pollination rates.

Potassium (Potash) is used by plants during photosynthesis. Without unlocked potassium ions, plants are unable to convert sunlight into simple sugars. Potassium also helps transport water throughout the plant, protects against temperature swings, and boosts immunity to disease. Insufficient Potash often causes soft fruit and discoloration of the skin of your tomatoes.

The acidity of the soil is also important because it affects how all of these nutrients are absorbed. The ideal range is 6.2 to 6.8 (slightly acidic), but tomatoes will grow from 5.8 to 7.0.
