The 53 gallon size can be misleading. As organic waste breaks down, it shrinks. Fresh grass trimmings, potato peels, and apple cores shrivel up as their moisture evaporates. Compost bacteria also convert sugars and carbohydrates into heat, shrinking the compost even more. When composting is finished, the scraps will take up 50 to 75% less volume!
At any time during the composting process, you can add fresh scraps and keep the composter working at high temperatures. When your compost is nearing completion, it's important to stop adding new material for a while. That way, the finished compost wont have any unfinished scraps mixed in with it.

When the compost is finished breaking down...
Finished compost (aka humus) makes great fertilizer or fill dirt. The round body of the composter also makes it a snap to empty out. There's no need to lift and carry the full keg of soil - instead, just roll it off the base and tumble it to wherever fertilizer is needed!
