THIS COMPOSTER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE, but here is another great Recycled Composter
that is a larger twin to this composter.
This composter is made from 100% recycled plastic. It has a 210 Liter (55.4 gallon) capacity, which is just the right size for kitchen scraps and yard debris. The lid on top is easy to secure or remove, and there are side panels that can be quickly removed to get compost out for use as a soil amendment. There is no bottom to the composter - it sits atop the ground and enriches the soil with compost tea.
This bottomless composter can be used to revitalize poor soil or to keep underground bulbs warm through the winter. It will slowly release nutrients into the ground as the compost breaks down, and the composting process itself is exothermic. Temperatures in the middle of the compost can reach as high as 150 degrees Fahrenheit (66 degrees Celsius), which is enough to keep an inch or two of soil 5-10 degrees above the ambient temperature.
Compost breaks down fastest at high temperature and with proper aeration. The dark exterior of this composter is designed to soak up the sun's warmth, accelerating the composting process. It also has ventilation slats that allow air to circulate throughout the pile. The shape of the compost bin and the temperature gradient create a mild chimney effect. This steady flow of oxygen promotes the growth of aerobic bacteria that break down tough organic matter, and it also kills off the anaerobic bacteria before they pose a threat.
The lid on top of the composter is 20 inches by 20 inches. It's perfect for keeping rain and animals out of the compost. It fits snugly on top, but does not attach and can be left off if you prefer an open top.
Each side of the Garden Oz composter has a removable panel. These panels are 9 inches by 11 inches and fit into the base of the composter. The tracks they fit in are open at the top, and the panels can be removed for easy access.
Assembly is a breeze - each corner of the composter bolts together with 3 bolts. These attachment pieces are included and create a very sturdy composter. The sides can easily hold together with a full load and wont pop loose the way that snap attachments sometimes do.
The Polypropylene plastic that's used in this composter is unusual. Unlike type 1 plastic (PETE) or type 2 plastic (HDPE), Polypropylene (type 5 plastic) usually ends up in the landfill rather than being recycled into new products. There isn't much demand for recycled Polypropylene - it's primarily used to make bottle caps and drinking straws, and those can't be made from recycled plastic for sanitary reasons. By purchasing products made with recycled Polypropylene, you can help prevent unnecessary waste and create market demand that encourages more people to recycle.Technical Details
