This marine quality rain barrel pump is your answer. It was originally designed to stop boats from sinking, and that power makes it ideal for watering your lawn. Since the pump is sealed to marine spec and battery operated, you don't have to worry about electric shock or exposed extension cords. And the three d-cell batteries can pump water continuously for up to 5 hours.

The WaterBuster pump is completely submersible. Just dunk it in your rain catching barrel and point the hose where you want to water. 42 inches of hose comes with the water pump. Since some of the hose attaches inside the pump's port, this gives you about 3 feet of reach. For longer distances, the hose can be augmented with additional lengths of tubing. The motor on the rain pump can push water through up to 4 feet of hose (or more with gravity assist).
