The Tumbleweed was Member Tested and Recommended by the National Home Gardening Club.

Every year our staff of gardening experts pick their top 4 products from our inventory of more than 1,000 different products. The Tumbleweed is a member of that very short list.

The vertical tumbling action of the patented Tumbleweed Compost Bin, designed with a stainless steel rod running through the middle, creates an aerobic action that offers a quick and odorless form of composting. It also has sturdy, galvanized tubular steel legs that won't rust that hold up the composter. The steel in these legs is made with recycled metal (as available). The recycled content varies between 17 and 20 percent.

This has quickly become our favorite compost tumbler! It will take you about 10 or 15 minutes to fully assemble it, using only your hands and a pocket screwdriver.

To get started composting, just throw some material into the Tumbleweed compost bin and give it a spin. When the composter gets full and heavy, you can push down on one side and pull up on the other and still make it tumble without much effort at all.

See our complete section of compost bins.

We were impressed with the way the stainless steel rod through the center helped quickly break down the material in the composter with just a few turns, improving the already good compost tumbling action.

Many people prefer tumbling composters because the design makes it easy to keep the compost turned and aerated. A well-aerated bin helps break down materials into ready compost faster.

Not sure this the right compost bin for you? Take a look at Lars' helpful article, Composter Reviews: Lars's Quick Picks .

A daily spin will produce earthy dark brown compost in as few as 21 days. Your specific composting time depends on your mix of materials, moisture of the compost, weather, etc. For the best results, we suggest using 75% dry ingredients (leaves, grass clippings, shredded newspaper) and 25% moist waste (vegetable scraps, dead flowers, etc). The composter will work with any blend of organic materials, but it may take longer to complete the process.

The tumbling composter comes with complete instructions on how to make compost.

The composter has two animal-resistant twist lock vented lids at either end that allow for easy filling and emptying of the bin while producing maximum aeration.

Constructed of a heavy duty UV-protected polypropylene plastic, the assembled bin stands 46" high, 26" wide, 34" deep. It has a 58 gallon capacity (otherwise measured as 7 to 8 cubic feet, or approximately 6.2 bushels) and weighs just 22 lbs when empty.

I purchased this composter and over a short time the lids become so hard to remove. I have tried everything to make them easier to remove with no joy. Sometimes the lids are wedged tight and we have to use a screw driver to free the lid. Very poor design in my opinion. I always rinse the lid with water before closing it but this does not help either.

Easy to assemble product. Not manufactured in China - a big plus for me. A great addition to my back yard gardening projects.

This is easy to assemble, easy to use. Really helps to mix up the bits and pieces. I can find that when it gets full, it can get heavy to turn but just get some momentum going and then it’s easier to turn over. I’m a bit of a weakling though, and I’ve added too much water, so my situation may be different than others. Overall I looove it! So much easier than turning a pile with a pitchfork. Well made - made in Australia.

I’ve had mine for 5 years and love it. So convenient to use. In the winter months, I store the veggie scraps, tea bags & coffee grounds in smaller containers in the garage where it’s cold (I’m in Michigan). Come warm spring days, I empty the stuff into my Tumbler and wait for some great rich compost to add to my garden. I highly recommend it -- especially for beginners in composting.

Very easy to assemble, works well and is easy to spin when loaded. Made my leaves and grass clippings into compost in 5 weeks. The only complaint I have is I wish it were higher from the ground to facilitate emptying into a wheelbarrow. You must shovel it out with a hang trowel. But it is a great value for a small yard that needs only small amounts of compost.

A decent product -- and, it works. HOWEVER...I’ve had mine for under two years and during this time, the tabs that hold the lids in place developed stress cracks and, just today, several snapped off and now the composter is, essentially, a large open-ended bucket. Point to note: it probably makes sense to not fill this ever more than about one-quarter (or less) full, as the constant turning of much more weight stresses the end cap tabs. The entire piece is still within its two-year warranty; I’m waiting to hear back from Clean Air Gardening to see what pieces they’ll replace.
