| | This kit includes 3 biodegradable pots, 3 packs of organic seeds, and 3 compressed soil pucks - everything you need for starting an indoor garden. The pots are made from all natural rice hulls that are waterproof and durable. The seeds are heirloom varieties that are sustainably produced and do not have any toxins or chemical residue. Each kit includes your choice of three different herbs (although if you really like oregano or chives, you can choose to double or triple up on your favorite herb). If you want all basil, then select all 3 basil varieties (Genovese Sweet Basil, Lemon Basil, and Greek Basil). If you want Basil, Italian Parsley and Chives, simply choose them from the drop down menu. Create your very own version of an Italian Herb Trio, French Herb Blend or Culinary Herb Mix with the herb seeds you choose. Rice hulls are one of the best materials for making biodegradable pots. Unlike a pot made out of peat or paper, rice hulls can stand up to water without getting soggy. This sustainable material allows slightly more air and moisture to breathe through the pot than plastic or ceramic pots do. If you run out of herb seeds or want to try something different, these pots can also be used to grow flowers, vegetables, herbs or decorative plants. Want to start plants indoors in the winter and plant them in your garden in the spring? With this planter, it's easy to avoid transplant shock. Just bury the whole pot in the ground, and it will break down over time without stressing the roots of the plant. The biodegradable flowerpots will last for several years. When they do wear out, it's easy to recycle the pots into soil. If a pot break or cracks, it can be buried or tossed into a composter. Just treat it as a "brown compost" like wood chips or tree bark - rice hulls are high in carbon and low in nitrogen. For some reason, compost worms really like rice hulls and will digest the pot in about 6 months (under the right conditions). Details: What exactly is a rice hull? Rice hulls are the "shell" that covers rice kernels while they grow. They keep rainwater and insects away from rice grains, and rice hulls have to be removed before rice can be eaten. Rice hulls are a byproduct of rice farming - they have a high lignin content and break down slowly. Since rice hulls are bulky and low value, they are often disposed of by burning them. The same properties of rice hulls that protect the plant also make them ideal for making pots. They are water and insect resistant and offer additional protection against heat and vibration. Rice hulls are also non-reactive; they don't release any toxins or absorb chemicals out of the air like some types of plastic do. A biodegradable pot made from rice hulls prevents the release of greenhouse gas in two ways. First, choosing a pot made from natural materials eliminates the co2 generated by making a pot out of plastic or clay. Second, this rice hull pot offers an alternative to using rice hulls as fuel. Before you place your order, make sure to pick three of the following herbs (at the top of the page): Genovese Sweet Basil Lemon Basil Greek Basil Cilantro Dill Dukat Greek Oregano Garden Chives Italian Parsley Mossy Curled Parsley English Thyme Customers Also Purchased:
