I have run through a number of reel mowers and settled on this one as the best mower for me. The mascot mower is extremely heavy duty and just plows through the grass. My first reel mower came from cleanairgardening and was a Brill Luxus 33. Lars suggested the Scott’s classic, but I was enthralled by the Brill and the fact that it would not need sharpening. The Brill’s are exceptionally well made and cut well. Unfortunately they are also very light and do not cut very high. That meant that with my weedy, bumpy lawn it would bounce over the grass or just lose traction often. If it was wet the wheels may slide over the grass. When I hit thick patches the mower did not have enough weight and momentum to plow through. I then bought a sunlawn which was heavier, but not well made. Then I got a Scott’s classic which is a very nice mower, but has a terrible handle. Finally I bought the Mascot. It is heavy, so it does not bounce. My model has 9" wheels, so it can only go to 2.25", which is still much better than my Brill, but 2.75" would be awesome and I will probably pay the money to buy new 10" wheels. I leave this mower in my trunk and mow all of my rental house lawns with it, that is between five and ten lawns a week. Those lawns are not well manicured at all, but this thing handles them. If you want a true replacement for a power mower that you will actually use for years and years, this is the one. Look on craigslist. You will find tons of the cheaper mowers for sale because they were only used for a season. Very seldom will you find this mower or the agri-fab mowers from which Mascot took the design, because these mowers are still being used by their original owners for years and decades.

Oh my gosh. I just finished mowing my yard and this mower is amazing. I’m 22 and in decent shape and pushing this mower was a breeze. This was my first time cutting my own grass in about two years, because the gas powered mower was just a pain for me to use. Buying this mower may be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’ll pay for itself in just under three months, and I love that I will never have to fill one of those stupid gas cans again. Another plus is that I can listen to my iPod at a decent volume while using this. While mowing, the only problem I had was when I got to a patch of silly fluffy grass, because it got me stuck a few times. I would like to mention that no instructions were included in my box, and that the cutter bar was not adjusted properly at all. It was so close to the blades that I could not even push the mower forward. Despite those inconveniences, this mower deserves the five star rating, and I highly recommend it.

I recently purchased this reel mower. The mower appears well-built and is simple to put together. It is heavy (39 lbs), but that is a feature if you need to cut St. Augustine grass. It cuts very well, and as with all manual reel mowers, you will need to edge and clean your sidewalks. Changing the cutting height is a bit of a hassle, but not a big deal to me as once it’s set I’ll never need to readjust it again. The only problem I have is that my 9-yr-old son can’t cut the entire lawn due to the weight of the mower; so I’ll have to do some of the cutting myself. Still, it’s really a pleasure to use this mower, plus my lawn isn’t terribly large.

I use on my st augustine. I went from 1 hour with my power to 25 minutes with this mower. This thing rules becuase my grass is now looking super healthy. Even though this mower is nice to push I would make sure you are in resonable shape before you tackle a large lot.
