    The Brill Accu ASM380 cordless electric reel mower is a motorized version of the bestselling Brill Luxus 38.

    It features a cordless rechargeable electric motor powered by a 24-volt NiCad battery, which gives approximately 1000 charging cycles.

    The Accu 38 weighs just 29 pounds, which is lighter than some unpowered reel mowers. It is not self propelled because it doesn't need to be with such a light weight.

    This mower is not designed to mow large areas, and should not be purchased to mow more than 3,000 square feet of grass. It is best suited as a "grooming mower" to keep a small yard or area of the yard beautifully maintained. Battery life is approximately 30 to 40 minutes of cutting.

    Cutting width is 38 cm, or approximately 15 1/2 inches. Cutting height ranges from 20mmto 45mm, or approximately 1/2" to 1.8".

    This mower has been discontinued. It was replaced with the new Brill Razorcut 38 electric mower in June 2008.

    Like manual reel mowers, a motorized reel mower will not cut tall weeds. It should also not be used in rocky areas, or run over sticks and debris. It is suited for lawns that are small and already very well maintained.

    • The Accu ASM380 takes about 30 minutes to assemble the handle and set up the battery when it arrives. You will need to charge it overnight before you mow the first time. It requires only a phillips screwdriver to assemble.

    It is very important to read the entire owner's manual before assembling and using this product. The Accu ASM380 is easy to use, but has a small learning curve.

    Detailed information on the ball bearing system: The Brill reel mowers have a sealed bearing with a separate bearing race. This is the way such bearings were produced until recent manufacturing technology allowed for the entire structure (bearing and race) to be produced as a sealed unit. The Sunlawn mowers feature the newer style of sealed bearing.

    For $400 I expected the German engineering promise and all started well. Not to last unfortunately. Battery died after 2 seasons and our seasons are only 5 months long. Replacement batteries cost a whopping $100.

    Buy this product only if your lawn is golf green perfect. Any little bump in the surface and the whole mower rattles with the snap in handles coming loose. They are a bit of work to lign up to snap back in. After awhile, the holes get ground down and the handle starts coming off with the slightest shake. Useless. Why not use a wingnut or cotter pin to secure handles in place? It’s not like you need to take them off for storage.

    Also, god forbid that it rains on a weekend and you can’t cut the grass. This mower does a horrible job if the grass is taller than 3-4 inches, and the highest setting is only 1-3/4". It simply pushes the grass down.

    What a waste of $400 ... I’m back to a corded Black & Decker. Emails to Brill went unanswered ... they should be embarassed.

    I love my Brill 380 ASM for its light weight, quiet operation, and for the great job it does. It’s light enough for me to easily load in and out of the raised shed and a car trunk. It’s so quiet, you could mow at midnight if you needed to and not disturb anyone. - In fact, when I worked long hours, I’d often be out mowing in the late evening under the spotlight or moonlight. No one even noticed because there was no noise. Not breathing fumes and not needing earplugs to mow is a real plus! I’d recommend it to anyone with a small lawn.

    The only caveat is that you should start with a lawn that’s not too long first and you need to pick up larger twigs and fir cones or they may become caught in the reel blades.

    I love this cute little mower. It is quiet, does a good job and is easy to use but it does have some quirks. Don’t let the grass get too long and make sure twigs and other debris is cleared before mowing. The battery only lasted three seasons. I had Batteries Plus rebuild it with higher rated cells. They charged $70, much less than a new one. We recently moved to a house with a much bigger yard, so I will buy a second battery and rotate them. Why oh why can’t I buy the lithium battery for this mower. It is only sold in Europe, never approved for the US market.
